[waga'dugu, französisch], Wagadugu, Hauptstadt von Burkina Faso, 308 m über dem Meeresspiegel, in der Trockensavanne der Landesmitte, (1994) 634 500 Einwohner; katholischer Erzbischofssitz; Universität (seit 1974); Nationalmuseum (Kunst der Mosi; Maskensammlung). Alle zwei Jahre finden hier afrikanische Filmfestspiele statt. Ouagadougou hat v. a. landwirtschaftliche Verarbeitungsindustrie (Baumwollentkernung, Textilfabrik, Gerberei), ferner Ziegeleien, Metall- und Holzverarbeitung, Getränkeherstellung, Zementfabrik; liegt im Mittelpunkt wichtiger Verkehrslinien (Eisenbahn von Abidjan), internationaler Flughafen.
 
 
Palast des Moro Naba, ferner im neuromanischen Stil erbaute katholische Kathedrale.
 
 
Ouagadougou wurde im 15. Jahrhundert als Sitz des Moro Naba (König) politisches Zentrum des gleichnamigen Reiches der Mosi, das auch nach der französischen Besetzung (5. 9. 1896 bestehen blieb. 1918-32 und seit 1947 Hauptstadt von Obervolta (heute Burkina Faso).
